Description

The workshop, to be held at the University of Vienna on July 15-16, 2025, aims to bring together researchers working within Distributed Morphology and Nanosyntax, inviting them to share recent developments and findings in their respective frameworks and/or to examine (key) phenomena from a comparative perspective, highlighting both the similarities and differences between the two approaches. This way, the conference wants to encourage dialogue, interaction and cooperation amongst researchers interested in formal morphosyntax.

While the workshop places a particular emphasis on phenomena observed in Romance languages, we welcome submissions addressing any language or language family. Contributions that draw on cross-linguistic data or provide comparative perspectives are especially encouraged, as they enrich the broader theoretical and empirical discussions.

Call for Papers

We welcome contributions for 30 minute talks, each followed by a 10 minute discussion session. As this workshop seeks to foster dialogue and collaboration between researchers working in Distributed Morphology and Nanosyntax, we especially welcome submissions that engage with one or more of the following topics: 

  • Curious cases of syncretism
  • Suppletion and contextual allomorphy
  • *ABA-patterns
  • The relevance of zero in DM and Nanosyntax
  • Structural gaps (e.g., (pro)nouns, TAM, gender etc.)
  • Perspectives on the different predictions made by DM and Nanosyntax
  • Phenomena at the interfaces with semantics and/or phonology

Abstracts should be anonymised and limited to two single-spaced A4-pages (including references and examples) with one-inch margins, and a minimum font size 12pt. sent in PDF format by February 15, 2025, 23:59 CET, to dmmeetsnano@gmail.com. Participants may submit up to two abstracts with a maximum of one single-authored paper.
